Midget hockey is open to boys and girls ages 15 and 17. It is here that players are recruited for and move on to playing in the Junior Leagues, be they Major Junior or Tier II Junior such as the BC Junior Hockey League.

The teams begin their season with a tiering round to determine which league they will compete in. Leagues are determined by the strength of the team not by the category of the association. Once the leagues have been formed the teams usually play between 14 and 18 league games where the players continue in their development. At the end of league play the teams are then placed into a play-off series based on their associations category to determine who will become the Vancouver Island District Champion and represent the Island at one of the four Midget Provincial Championships. The four categories are “AAA”, “AA”, “A” and “B”.
